14 / 26
If the temperature of a liquid can be measured in Kelvin units as x K and in Fahrenheit units is y °F, the relation between the two systems of measurement of temperature is given by the linear equation y = \dfrac{9}{5}(x - 273) + 32
(ii) If the temperature is 158 °F, then find the temperature in Kelvin.

Answer
1
Substitute y = 158 into the temperature conversion relation and simplify.
\text{${color:#2E2EFF}158{/color} = \dfrac{9}{5}(x - 273) + 32$}
⇒
\text{ $158 - 32 = \dfrac{9}{5}(x - 273)$}
⇒
\text{ $126 = \dfrac{9}{5}(x - 273)$}
⇒
\text{ $\dfrac{5}{9} × 126 = x - 273$}
⇒
$70 = x - 273$
⇒
$x = 273 + 70$
⇒
$x = 343$
2
Write the temperature in Kelvin.
\textbf{Answer: $343\,K$}
